GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Yayasan Griya Mandiri (YGM) is a non-profit organization established by a group of activists with various educational backgrounds and expertise, which have similar views to the need of improving the quality of community empowerment activities, particularly low-income group. The organization was initiated in 1997 through some pilot projects on community-based housing development. In 2001 YGM was established into a formal organization and was legally formed under the notary act No. 22, June 25, 2001.

PROGRAM
To carry out its mission YGM concentrates on the following programs:

CO-BILD
Community-Based Initiatives for housing and Local Development (Co-BILD) was initiated in mid 2001 by UNHCS/UNDP in collaboration with the Government of Indonesia and is financially supported by the Government of the Netherlands.
Objective: :
The general objective of the program is to provide financial assistance for housing and settlement development for the low-income families that have no access to financial support from banks. .
Specifically, the objectives are directed towards the following:
- To promote community-based initiative for housing and settlement development,
- To provide revolving fund to improve the quality of housing and settlement,
- To create mechanism to develop a funding system to support housing and settlement development that is more affordable and can be easily accessed by the low-income people.
- Healthy Kitchen
The program was initiated under a collaboration with Dinas Kesehatan Propinsi DIY (Provincial Health Department of Yogyakarta), aimed at enhancing community’s awareness of healthy dwelling. This program consisted of two activities that is Providing revolving funds to improve kitchen’s physical condition and liquid waste or household sewerage system.
Objective:
To provide opportunity and motivation for women or housewives in improving family healthcare through kitchen improvement.

Training
YGM conducts training in cooperation with several institutions. The objectives of this activity are:
- to enhance the capacity of human resource, especially the youth who are interested in community development in the area of housing and settlement improvement.
- to upgrade the skills of professional community organizers on technical and managerial aspects of community development

Short-term Programs
YGM also works together with government and other organizations in local, national, and international levels in implementing short-term programs in the area of community-based housing and settlement development and built environment.
